Snowlands On Snow

This winter season Snowlands will be leading cross-country ski and snowshoe trips in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Here is the schedule for the 2007-2008 season:

Sat Dec 15 Ski Donner Summit - Leisurely tour to Flora Lake and Lake Angela. Led by Marcus Libkind, noted author of Sierra Ski Touring, founder of Snowlands Network, and an advocate for low-impact winter recreation and public lands use planning. This trip has very little elevation change, but passes through convoluted terrain. Instruction will be given on how to navigate with a map and compass. You bring the compass; maps will be provided. Be ready to go at 10:30am. Meet at the Donner Summit Sno-Park near the restroom at the back parking area. Sno-Park permit is required. This trip will be rescheduled if insufficient snow. 4 miles RT. Advanced beginner.
Sun Dec 16 Snowshoe tour - Same tour as Dec 15.
Sat Jan 5 Ski Tour - Luther Pass/Hope Valley loop off Hwy 89. 6miles RT Intermediate.
Sat Jan 12 Ski Tour - Shealor-Silver Fork Ridge, Hwy.88 (Near Silver Lake). Wonderful scenery & ski terrain! 6 miles RT. Intermediate.
Sun Jan 13 Snowshoe tour - Two Sentinels and Castle Point, Hwy 88. Outstanding vistas! 6 miles. Intermediate.
Sat Jan 26 Ski Tour - Pole Creek to Bradley Hut below Sierra Crest. 6 miles RT. Intermediate.
Meet at 9 AM (ready to go) at the parking area at Pole Creek and Hwy 89 (2.3 miles north of Squaw Valley Road, 6.5 miles south of Truckee). Parking is limited, so arrive early. This cross-country ski tour goes up Pole Creek towards the Bradley Hut at the base of the Sierra crest. The terrain type is very gentle grades, much of it on a snowcovered fire road, to the hut. From there, depending on group desire and ability, volunteer Rich Steele may lead up to a high point on the saddle between Pole and Deep Creeks. This will afford a nice "photo-op" vista of the crest, Silver Peak, the peaks of Desolation, and a sliver of Lake Tahoe. Elevation gain: about 1500' to hut (about 2200' total to high point). 7 miles RT. 8 if go to high point.
USGS Topo: Granite Chief and Tahoe City 7.5. NOTE: No snowmobiles in Pole Creek, compared to Silver Creek next door. For more on Rich, see www.tahoebackcountry.net

Following the presentation, we will gear up and head out to the Tahoe Meadows for some fun in the snow (weather permitting). If you are new to the area and would like to try something new this winter, this is a great opportunity to get out there and take advantage of one of the area’s great winter activities. Snowlands volunteer and long time regional advocate, Gail Ferrell, will be leading the adventure, and will be able to answer any questions about the area, the sport, and the organization that you may have. We will NOT be providing snowshoes, but we will be happy to advise you as to were you can rent or purchase a pair. This is a beginner trip and great for ages 12 and up. Please RSVP by January 30. If you have any questions, please contact Angela at 775 850 2272.
