Inspiring Environmental Film Festival Debuts at
University of Nevada Reno

”Take Action” to Benefit Snowlands Network

Presented by Patagonia, The 2008 Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival on Tour benefits Snowlands' work to save thousands of acres in the Sierra Nevada. We have a special focus on the Tahoe Meadows on Mount Rose Highway – a short drive from downtown Reno.  These thousands of wilderness acres are a winter wonderland for skiers, snowshoers and thousands of snow-play families from Reno and the Tahoe Basin. These lands need our protection.

Reno region businesses supporting Snowlands’ “Take Action” Film Festival Tour include Patagonia and REI Reno.

Wombat
Jason Ables
In less than a minute, this rapid-fire animation tells you everything you need to know about how to get along on earth for the next million years. Interconnected, all is one, Wombat. (USA, 1min)  bumpercars.com/flash/index.html
Rita
Alison Teal Blehert-Koehn  (USC)
In an extreme place, a young girl finds friendship and connection. Alison’s true story: a seven-year-old girl, dragged around the world by her adventure travel guide/photographer/yoga-teaching parents, she longs to be a kid and stay in one place long enough to have friends and go to school with children her own age. Unexpectedly, during one of the family’s expeditions high in the Himalaya of Nepal, she befriends a seven-year-old Sherpa girl named Rita. Alison sneaks out to join Rita and they embark on a wild and touching adventure over an 18,000 ft. pass near the base of Mt. Everest—a journey that plops them right in Alison’s dream world. Kids Choice, Telluride Mountainfilm, Best Family Short, Boulder Adventure FF, Nominated for MTV Movie Award.  Young Filmmaker Award - Wild & Scenic Film Festival (USA, 2006, 6min) www.alisonteal.com
Oil and Water Project
Seth Warren
Kayakers prove you don’t need big oil to reach the best whitewaters of the Americas. Two kayakers embark on an endless summer-style 35,000 km road trip from Alaska to Argentina in a retro-outfitted Japanese fire truck without a single drop of petroleum. They converted their regular diesel engine to run on everything from pig lard to palm pulp and they traveled for 9 months in pursuit of the best whitewater in the Americas. The pair coordinated with schools, local governments, farmers, agricultural research centers and media to conduct demonstrations advocating for the use of alternative energy all along the way. Best Environmental Film, Taos MountainFilm, Everest Award Recipient for Advocacy.  People's Choice Award - Wild & Scenic Film Festival (USA, 2007, 34min) www.oilandwaterproject.org
Owens Lake
Channel G
Can you rebuild a once vibrant Sierra ecosystem? Yes! In 1913 water diversions by the city of Los Angeles, 250 miles away, turned the largest lake in California into an alkali dry lakebed and dust bowl; last year the city of L.A. was forced to control the dust for violating the federal Clean Air Act and as a result of water being released onto the lake bed, thousands upon thousands of migratory birds have returned, some traveling from southern South America to Arctic breeding grounds; 62 miles of the Lower Owen River has also been restored; quite possibly the largest (and certainly unintentional) restoration project in North America and the world. Weather We Change
Duane Kubischta (Squaw Valley)
Join the journey to find a greener ski bum (needs snow!) lifestyle in a warming era. A group of athletes have taken a pledge to follow in the footsteps of pro skier Alison Gannett in search of a greener ski bum lifestyle. Mother Nature serves up a healthy dose of reality with a bleak early season, but these snow soldiers eventually find the deep powder that recharges their fight to save the snow. Stunning footage of the Swiss Alps and the best of the West Coast sets the backdrop for their journey as we learn about global warming as an issue that skiers can’t ignore. Carpa Diem
Sergio Cannella
Waste water? Endanger the fish? Yikes!  Before sleeping, a child in her apartment is lovingly watching a fish in the aquarium. In the meantime her younger brother is being mindless of the open tap and the water flowing out of the washbasin ... a waste that could turn into a tragedy. Many awards, including: Best Short, Vatavaran FF; Best Spot, Festival International Du Film Sur L’Énergie de Lausanne. (Italy, 2006, 2min) www.sergiocannella.it
Meat Jim
Madison Sheffield, Katie Heineman
Two college vegetarians think they can transform the eating habits of a local cowboy because it’s better for the earth.  Or so they think. But the vibrant vaquero has his own thoughts. First prize, UCSD Earth Week Environmental FF. (USA, 2007, 11min) www.goveg.org
Love Song to Glen Canyon
Katie Lee
The magnitude of what’s been lost is readily apparent, even to those who never knew Glen Canyon as it once was.  This beautiful film is a journey through the 10 magical years Katie Lee enjoyed running the Glen before this idyllic and beloved landscape was drowned. The viewer runs the emotional rapids of 140 largely unpublished photos set to Katie’s narrative and heartfelt music. We see the canyons through the eyes of her love—pre-dam—and then through the eyes of her loss—post-flood. (USA, 2006, 30min)
Lost People of Mountain Village
Special repeat showing
A droll take on 'amenity migration' to the mountains! Anthropologist Wade Davis calls it "no less than the most spectacular archaeological and anthropological discovery of our lifetimes." But when a lost backcountry skier high in the Rocky Mountains stumbles on a monumental complex of structures--apparently completely uninhabited--the only thing the experts agree on is that we may never know what really happened to "The Lost People of Mountain Village."
